A young police volunteer has appeared in court accused of making up that she was sexually assaulted by a stalker.

Laura Kilty, 20, worked as a volunteer with Surrey Police when she reported that a man stalked and sexually assaulted her, sparking a major police investigation and public appeal.

She had told police the alleged incident happened on September 29 as she left work.

Her clothes were taken away for examination and two statements were made, the court was told.

The young woman appeared at Guildford Magistrates' Court today accused of perverting the course of justice.

She was later charged with intending to pervert the course of justice.

Kilty stood in the dock charged with one count of committing an act/series of acts with intent to pervert the course of public justice.

Surrey Police said the alleged offence was not connected to Kilty's role as a volunteer with the force.

The clerk today read out the indictment, saying: 'On September 29 last year at Guildford Police Station with intent to pervert the course of justice, you made a false allegation and this is an indictable only offence.'

Prosecutor Natalie Roepke told the court that Kilty reported that a male sexually assaulted her while she was leaving work. She also alleged the man had been stalking her.

Kilty, of Guildford, Surrey, was granted conditional bail yesterday.

Presiding magistrate Caroline Drury told Kilty the matter was too serious for the magistrates to hear and the case would be sent to Crown Court.

Kilty is due to appear on December 9 at 10am in Guildford Crown Court.
