Lord Alli's old friend tipped become US ambassador

Influential Labour donor Lord Alli has close links to the woman tipped to become the next US ambassador. 

Valerie Amos has enjoyed a decades-long friendship with the millionaire who has come under scrutiny for his grip on Sir Keir Starmer's Government. 

She is now widely thought to be a frontrunner to go to Washington, further adding to the questions of Lord Alli's reach. 

He has donated £700,000 to the Labour Party, giving Sir Keir £16,200 for clothes and £2,485 for glasses, made clothing donations to Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and Chancellor Rachel Reeves and was granted unrestricted access to No10.

 Baroness Amos is now tipped to become Britain's woman in Washington. 

A source told The Sunday Telegraph: 'Valerie Amos's name comes up a lot. She is very, very smart and would be a good appointment.' 

A diplomatic source added: 'I think she is an increasingly popular choice in diplomatic circles.' The Amos Bursary said: 'We do not comment on our patrons.'
