Trick or Treat: Navigating Halloween with Braces in Amarillo

· NewsTalk 1290

A lot of kids grow up in Amarillo knowing that at some point they are going to need braces. I feel that is a rite of passage I missed growing up so now here I sit with Invisalign in my mouth right now. Teeth move over the years. There is over crowding and stuff just needs to be fixed.

Having braces can really be tough when it comes to Halloween and trick-or-treating. You come home with a lot of goodies but you have to sort out the candy. There will be some you can eat and some that you will need to stay away from.

I learned this twice when my daughter went through two rounds of braces growing up. We really knew what was allowed and what was not. The days of popcorn at the movies were numbered. Something as simple as corn on the cob was a no-go. We went home with a full list of things not allowed.

This is where I am lucky with my Invisalign because I don't have any food restrictions. I just pop out my liners and eat whatever I want. So when it comes to Halloween there are candies you most definitely want to stay away from.

Of course, there is a full list there as well. Candies that can damage your braces are a big fat no. You don't want to spend so much on that perfect smile and then damage the braces.

You also don't want all the gooey candy to get stuck in the bracket and wires.  What a mess that could be. Just stay away from certain candy. Maybe the kids can trade amongst themselves so they are not short any.

The kiddos will not be too happy just disposing of any candy on the list. Parents use this to your advantage. The non-approved candy can go to you as your service charge for taking them out trick-or-treating, or maybe for paying for the braces in the first place.

Halloween is fun and should be. It can also wreak havoc on braces if you are not careful.
