Four early signs of dementia that may appear before memory loss

by · Birmingham Live

A GP has shared essential advice on early detection of dementia, emphasising its importance even before the condition impacts cognitive abilities, like severe memory loss or speech issues. There's no cure for dementia, which afflicts 944,000 people in the UK according to studies, with one in eleven over 65 experiencing it.

Dr Johannes Uys from Broadgate General Practice highlighted that spotting signs early is crucial for managing symptoms through treatment plans and medication. He pointed out that dementia symptoms are not solely memory-related but can also be physical, listing four key indicators linked to particular dementia types like Parkinson's disease dementia.

The doctor noted the variability of symptoms across individuals, advising Surrey Live readers: "However if you notice any of these early signs in yourself or a loved one, it's important to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. Early detection and intervention can help manage symptoms and provide the necessary support."

While it's often a challenge to prevent dementia, maintaining a fit and healthy lifestyle in your younger years through regular exercise could be beneficial. Medical professionals recommend quitting smoking and cutting down on alcohol, with the NHS suggesting we should steer clear of consuming large amounts of saturated fats, salt and sugar, and instead increase our fibre intake.

However, this doesn't eliminate the risk of developing the condition, as Dr Johannes Uys highlights the early symptoms. According to a recent survey by the Alzheimer's Society, only one in three people would seek medical advice if they or a loved one displayed signs of dementia.

This is largely due to the misconception that these symptoms are merely signs of ageing. Nonetheless, it's always advisable to get checked out, particularly for those over 65 who suspect they may have the condition.
