'Hidden gems': Discover secret places in America, southern Utah in new guide

ST. GEORGE — With millions of visitors pouring into southern Utah's stunning national parks and monuments, some locals may be looking for a way to escape the crowds and get back in touch with nature.

Finding such hidden treasures in America's wilderness is something author Ted Alvarez seeks to accomplish with his new guide, "Hiking Hidden Gems in America's National Parks." Alvarez is Backpacker Magazine's northwest editor and lives in Seattle, Washington. From a young age, his parents took him to Colorado, New Mexico and the Rockies, he said.

"So I saw this world that I thought was incredible," Alvarez said.

He said he understands the irony of publishing a guide to finding less-known places.
