Before and after satellite images show Spain devastation
· RTE.ieSatellite images released by the NASA Earth Observatory have showcased the devastating impact of flash floods which hit eastern Spain this week.
"The Operational Land Imager on Landsat 8 captured this image showing widespread flooding of urban and agricultural lands in and around the coastal city of Valencia on 30 October," NASA said.
"Sediment-laden floodwaters also filled the channel of the Turia river, which empties into the Balearic Sea (part of the Mediterranean), and the L'Albufera coastal wetlands south of the city."
The before picture was captured on 25 October 2022.
The after picture was taken on 30 October 2024.
At least 211 people were confirmed yesterday to have been killed in the flooding which came after a storm system brought extreme amounts of rain in the space of a few hours.
The storm system arrived in the country at the weekend, with Tuesday bringing the most severe weather. Flooding overnight into 30 October saw houses inundated, cars washed away, and bridges torn down.
