A register for families who experience a stillbirth has been welcomed by bereaved parents.

It follows a long-standing campaign by parents and advocacy groups who called on Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys to create a mechanism to record still births.

The Stillbirths Register which went live this week, is an 'opt-in' facility to ensure privacy for families and their loved ones who have suffered such trauma.

The change came into effect following the enactment of the Civil Registration (Electronic Registration) Bill 2024.

The initiative has been welcomed by Nina Doyle, mother of babies Liam and Grace, who is the spokesperson for the advocacy group Féileacáin.

Ms Doyle thanked Minister Humphreys for working with parents and said it was with "immense pride that bereaved parents are now being given the opportunity to make their precious baby's record public if they wish to do so".
