Vitamin-rich 23p breakfast superfood helps you reach and maintain healthy weight
Most people skip breakfast or don't have enough to set them up for the day - but those who know the power of food will reap the long-term benefits
by Andrew Nuttall · The MirrorThe saying is true that breakfast is by far one of the most important meals of the day. This meal builds you up from the inside, boosting energy and brain power for the day ahead.
Just grabbing a quick bite on the go won't do. In fact, you could be setting yourself up for some later health troubles if you don't think about what you're eating and why.
Experts recommend one item that will be a quick and easy addition to your morning routine could lead to better health is eggs. They don't need to break the bank either - they can be bought at Aldi in a six pack for £1.35, which works out at about 23p per egg.
The humble egg is a very versatile ingredient that can elevate breakfast to something special - beyond the quick round of toast or bowl of cereal most make time for in the mornings. The nutrient-rich food is high in vitamins A, D and E as well as essential omega-3 fatty acids.
These vitamins help to the immune system as well as keep the skin, bones, teeth and muscles healthy. They're also a huge source of protein, with the average egg containing around 7g each.
Everyone's protein intake will depend on their own bodies. According to the NHS, a rough guide for healthy adults works out as needing about 1 gram (g) of protein for each kilogram (kg) of their body weight every day.
But, the benefits of protein go beyond building muscle. In fact, it can help those looking to shed some weight as well.
By meeting your individual protein target, your body will stop producing ghrelin - a hormone that makes you want to eat. Instead, it will actually produce more appetite-reducing hormones that tell your body it's time to step away from the plate and curb snack cravings, too.
Loading up with the right amount of protein will lead to eating fewer calories overall, making weight management easier. Eggs can be eaten alone or paired up with other foods to increase the health benefits further.
Think about whipping up a quick omelette and including some tomatoes rich in antioxidants that may help reduce the risk of developing certain cancers or some grated cheese for even more protein.
