Bed bugs are a real nuisance and can leave a very painful bite.

These unwelcome guests can infest every nook of your home, from mattresses to drawers, leaving Brits with itchy bites. But fear not, Navin Khosla, pharmacist at Now Patient, has explained what to do if you're bitten.

While bed bugs aren't known to spread diseases to humans, their bites can still cause a world of discomfort, reports the Express. Navin warns: "This can be anything from a slight itch or irritation to an allergic reaction, therefore knowing what to do when you have been bitten is crucial, especially with the growing prevalence of the insect across public areas as well as in the home."

"If you find yourself bitten by a bed bug, I would advise you to do the following." To combat the bite, Khosla recommends: "If bitten, apply a cold compress to reduce inflammation, also be sure to disinfect the area with salt water or disinfectant wipes to reduce the risk of infection."

And to avoid making things worse: "You also should try your best to not scratch or break the bitten skin, utilising sting cream and anti-histamines can help here." However, the pharmacist advised reaching out to your GP if you're experiencing a more severe reaction. "It could be an allergy, infection or something else entirely," Khosla added.

The pharmacist suggested keeping any clothes worn outside separate from your fresh clothes. The expert further advised: "Be sure to wash them on a hot wash before risking an infestation in your home. Storing them in a plastic bag can be a good way of avoiding a potential spread when waiting to wash the items."
