Huawei out to recruit Western research talent

Huawei is aiming to suck in research talent from across the world for its $1.4 billion R&D centre at Lianqui Lake outside Shanghai (top picture),

The first researchers moved into the centre last month. By the end of next year, it hopes to have 30,000 researchers working at the 160-hectare campus – many of them from abroad.

“Huawei is now focused on recruiting Western talent,” says Ren Zhengfei, Huawei’s CEO, “a scenic and attractive campus is a magnet for the best talent in foreign countries, The goal is to create a good atmosphere for them to work and live.”

To help achieve that, Huawei plans to set up over 100 cafes across the campus. A train station for the site should be opened by year-end.

Ren says it will be necessary to offer US-sized salaries to attract foreign researchers. The starting salary is $50k.

Ren has a liking for European type buildings and in 2018 opened an R&D hub at Dongguan near Shenzhen (bottom picture),
