Mental health calls on rise

RCMP said on one end of the spectrum that thefts from motor vehicles are going down, while on the other end officers are investigating two attempted murder reports.
Here is a complete list of third quarter crime statistics:
- There were two attempted murder investigations during this quarter. Both remain under investigation.
- Theft from motor vehicle continues to be at record lows as the public continued to be proactive when securing their vehicles and items.
- Mental health related calls rose from 105 to 127. RCMP is employing a new way of capturing a better overall picture of the mental health work load in the community. This may result in the appearance of increase in the number of incidents rather than capturing more incidents that occurred regularly.
- Files involved drugs and alcohol increased from 105 to 216 which the increase is believed to have been influenced by the environment of de-criminalization.
- Drug investigations rose from four to 10. Drug trafficking investigation remain lower as they are influenced by the B.C.-wide de-criminalization legislation.
- Check well-beings, suspicious persons/vehicles/occurrences, and unspecific assistance rose 14 per cent as the police were called to manage a variety of scenarios.
- Motor vehicle collisions were down; however, there was one fatality.
- Impaired driving charges were up from 15 to 18.
- Total calls for service were up seven per cent when compared to the third quarter of 2023.
