Srinagar, Sep 29: A Srinagar patient has undergone endo-fusion procedure.

The  new technique endo-fusion, is used for treating spine problems in elderly and obese patients who struggle to walk and even have difficulty standing. It serves as a lifeline for severely obese individuals with high BMI, where traditional open spine surgery is almost impossible. Endo-fusion offers a ray of hope for a better tomorrow and an improved quality of life for such patients.

Mohamad Ibrahim Mir, a 63-year-old from Srinagar weighing 125 kg, had been suffering from back pain, right leg pain, and was unable to stand or walk. He initially underwent open surgery in Srinagar, but even after the procedure, he remained bedridden, crying in pain due to his back and severe leg discomfort. His relatives then contacted Dr. Trivedi, an Endoscopic Spine Surgeon and Head of the Spine Master’s Unit at Vasal Hospital, Jalandhar, Punjab.

After assessing the patient’s high BMI (Body Mass Index), Dr. Trivedi opted for Endo-Fusion Surgery, performing the first such procedure in North India. The entire fixation system, including the bullet cage, was placed inside the diseased spine through small 7mm incisions. The surgery took significantly less time compared to open or microscopic surgeries, with minimal blood loss. Remarkably, the very next day,  Mir was able to start walking.

Dr. Trivedi, who has been performing endoscopic spine surgeries for the past 12 years, expressed his satisfaction with the result, stating that his extensive experience made the Endo-Fusion technique straightforward. As the first Endo-Fusion surgery in North India, he is thrilled with the outcome and called it a blessing for those who cannot walk due to back or leg pain, particularly in elderly patients with a high BMI.
