NEISSR celebrates 9th Graduation Day
· Nagaland PageDimapur, November 1: North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR), Peace Centre celebrated its 9th Graduation Day on November 1 at the Bishop Abraham Memorial Hall. The event honored the achievements of the MSW graduates with Dr. D Gnanadurai, Vice Chancellor of St. Joseph University, Chumoukedima, as the Chief Guest and M Rollan Lotha, Chief Operating Officer – Program, NSRLM, as the Special Guest.
Chief Guest Dr. D Gnanadurai inspired graduates with a message focused on peace and environmental responsibility. He congratulated the graduating class and highlighted the expectations society holds for social workers-to turn theoretical knowledge into practical, transformative actions.
He urged graduates to cultivate a positive outlook and set high goals, emphasizing the importance of humility and resilience, drawing inspiration from the life of Ratan Tata.
Dr. Gnanadurai stressed the role of social workers as peacemakers, encouraging them to reflect on global peace metrics, study peaceful societies, and apply those insights locally.
Peace begins with transforming our own minds, he reminded, emphasizing that inner peace can radiate to families, communities, and nations.
He further called on graduates to prioritize environmental conservation, urging them to consider the legacy they will leave for future generations. In his closing, he redefined success as a life marked by satisfaction, happiness, and commitment to peace and the earth, inspiring graduates to embark on their journeys as agents of positive change.
Special Guest M Rollan Lotha inspired graduates with an impactful message on the role of social work in personal and community transformation. He stressed that being a good person is fundamental to the profession, encouraging graduates to maintain a continuous learning mindset and focus on making a difference in their communities.
Highlighting the government’s recognition of social work’s importance, he urged collaborations with government bodies and NGOs for campus recruitment, noting that these partnerships are valuable for advancing community development.
Lotha emphasized the importance of holding true to social work values, being adaptable, and exploring multi-disciplinary roles, including entrepreneurship. He advocated the “Back to Land” initiative, proposing it as a solution to unemployment by reconnecting with traditional practices. Praising NEISSR’s Social Entrepreneurship Specialization, he called for a shift from Nagaland’s salary-based economy to a more enterprise-driven approach, encouraging graduates to be enterprising in spirit and practice. Lotha concluded by reminding the graduates to live by example, emphasizing that social work is a lifelong commitment to ethical service, community engagement, and flexibility in one’s career and personal growth.
Dr. Fr. C.P. Anto, Principal of NEISSR, in his welcome speech, honored faculty and staff for their commitment to shaping the graduates. Reflecting on NEISSR’s ten-year journey, he celebrated its impact in transforming individuals to address society’s needs.
As Nagaland’s first MSW college and India’s first with a specialization in Peace and Conflict Transformation Studies, NEISSR equips students as “social doctors” to tackle social issues with knowledge, skills, and a commitment to peace and justice, he said.
He urged graduates to apply social work’s universal values, advocating for truth, peace, and justice in every context they encounter.
The ceremony also recognized outstanding students: Vevolü Kulla-O received the Class Topper award, James Phanungkiu was honored as Best Student, Pezangulie Suokhrie as Philanthropist, Ethutsolo Naro for Best Research, and Tsulula K for Best Field Work.
Khenishe K Sumi, MSW batch 2021-23, was lauded for being the first NEISSR student to clear the JRF.
Best Student awardee, James Phanungkiu expressed his gratitude to God, his family, and mentors. Reflecting on his two-year journey, he acknowledged the transformative experiences and growth in qualities like sincerity, honesty, and leadership. He encouraged juniors to embrace opportunities, take risks, and prepare themselves as future leaders.
The program was chaired by Tshekukhro-u Akami, MSW SEM III and Alongba T Sangtam, MSW SEM I with the blessing of Rev. Fr. Chacko Karinthayil, Governing Board Member, NEISSR. Multimedia presentation and Special song was presented by Mr. JoybaSangtam and NEISSR choir respectively.
Dr. Abel Ariina, Assistant Professor, NEISSR, facilitated the graduates, while Rev. Fr. G.L. Khing, Vice Principal and Administrator, delivered the vote of thanks. A total of 87 students successfully graduated with a Master of Social Work degree.
