Doctor lists four main symptoms of mpox as first case of potentially deadly strain detected in UK
by Sonia Sharma · ChronicleLiveA doctor has outlined the four main symptoms of mpox to look out for as the first case of a potentially deadly strain was found in the UK.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has detected a human case of Clade Ib mpox in London. It says the person involved had recently travelled to countries in Africa that are seeing community cases of Clade Ib mpox.
Any contacts will be offered testing and vaccination as needed and advised on any necessary further care if they have symptoms or test positive. The UKHSA has emphasised that the risk to the UK population remains low.
However a doctor has said there are a number of symptoms people should be aware of and has issued advice to the public. Dr John Burke, of AXA Health, there are four main signs to look out for:
- The appearance of a rash that looks like blisters across the face and body
- High temperature and chills
- Headache, muscle aches, back pain, and a feeling of exhaustion
- Swollen lymph nodes
Dr Burke said: "These symptoms can be confused with other infectious illnesses, particularly chicken pox. At the current time in the UK, a history of travel to Africa or exposure to a known case are important features and advice from a health professional is needed if there are concerns. If you do contract the virus, it is usually mild and most people recover within a few weeks without any treatment, and there is an effective vaccine."
The health expert also said people can take certain precautions if they come into contact with the virus. He said: "Self-isolation when unwell with an infectious disease and close attention to washing hands regularly with soap and water or using an alcohol-based sanitiser is part of ordinary life in the UK post the Covid pandemic and these measures should continue. Being aware of the symptoms of mpox and avoiding contact with others and seeking medical advice if you suspect you may be infected are important precautions."
