The UK has been warned it faces an "extremely unusual" weather shift. Meteorologists have reportedly been left baffled and confused by an "extremely unusual" weather shift, with conditions peculiar as a so-called "anomaly" strikes the country.

South-eastern Europe, Spain and Italy will catch the winter cold while the UK stays mild, it has been reported. The UK faces milder air and warmer conditions as swathes of the European Union continent are hit by sub-zero mercury and conditions to shiver in.

Dr Todd Crawford, meteorologist for Atmospheric G2, said: “We are now much cooler across south-east Europe and notably warmer across Scandinavia and western Europe as strong high pressure will be in control for at least the first half of November.

“Climate models are in agreement in depicting a winter characterised by anomalous warmth to the north and east with near to even slightly-below normal temperatures in southern and western Europe.” Dr Crawford said: “The signal is for a stronger-than-normal polar vortex, which implies lower-than-normal chance for a Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW).

“As winter progresses, we expect a trend towards more persistent positive NAO conditions, with lower-than-normal chances of an SSW. Across northern and eastern Europe, warmer, wetter and windier weather is expected, especially in the back half of winter.”

The warnings come amid the thermometer hitting double digits - as mid-November proves to be very balmy indeed. This week, the Met Office says Monday (November 4) will be "another cloudy day to come with the best of the sunny spells across parts of Scotland and the far southeast later."

The forecast adds: "Mostly dry with outbreaks of light patchy drizzle especially over higher ground. Temperatures around average for November." Remaining cloudy overnight with a couple spots of drizzle in places. Clear intervals in the south and east later which will allow mist and fog to develop.

Expect a mostly dry day for Tuesday but staying cloudy with the best of the brightness to the lee of high ground. Any drizzle will be confined to higher ground.
