Snow weather map shows which parts of UK to be hit as temperatures plummet
The UK is set to temperatures plummet in an Arctic blast later this month with snow flurries hitting parts of the country in an abrupt end to the mild conditions
by Tim Hanlon · The MirrorBrits will see temperatures plummet later this month as new snow weather maps show the areas expected to see the white stuff fall.
A low pressure system is seen sitting over the UK in a couple of weeks, according to charts, bringing both rain and snow to large parts of the country. Cold air is moving southwards and the first significant snow is expected to hit Scotland and northern England on the night of November 20, and then continue over the following days.
A map from WXCharts shows the first flurries arrive on November 17 in the north of Scotland with a high pressure system still in place but gradually that gets pushed away and dark blue rain clouds move in from the northwest. Alow pressure sits over the country by November 20 bringing widespread rain but also snow to central and southern Scotland including Edinburgh and Glasgow while northwest England, including Cumbria, will also see flurries.
The snow will continue over the following days but be mainly confined to Scotland. Temperatures are also expected to drop below zero in northern areas but it will be cold across the country that week with the mercury generally in low single figures. A forecast by the Met Office from November 13-22 also predicts that there could be northerly winds and colder conditions towards the end of that spell.
It states: “High pressure from early in the week likely reducing its influence during the middle of next week though to an uncertain degree. Likely turning cloudier again across many areas with a chance of showers or longer spells, most probable in parts of the north and east. Southwestern areas have the greatest chance of maintaining largely dry conditions.
"Temperatures around average but with a greater chance of mild conditions in the northwest and below average temperatures in the southeast. During next weekend and into the following week there are signs that the influence of high pressure will decline to the west. This means northern and eastern areas remain most likely to see more unsettled conditions. This also increases the likelihood of a spell of northerly winds and colder conditions."
Meanwhile, before that for this weekend the high pressure is set to continue influencing the weather meaning mild temperatures but some cloudy conditions. "Another grey day for many with the odd spot of light rain or drizzle. However, northern Scotland will continue to see some sunshine, and a few brighter spells developing elsewhere," is says for Saturday and looking to Sunday through to Tuesday it adds: "A band of light rain will move southeastwards across the UK on Sunday, introducing drier and brighter weather for the start of next week. Patchy fog and frost."
