Four scents that will help keep rodents away - including one that smells 'terrible'

Rats and mice have a very strong sense of smell, which they rely on for their survival and these are the four scents that will help keep them at bay

Rats and mice, known for their poor eyesight, depend greatly on their sharp sense of smell to survive. To keep these unwanted guests at bay, introducing strong scents can "overpower" their sensitive noses.

Experts from Eliminated LTD have revealed a range of smells that are repellent to rats and mice, ensuring they "stay away". One scent particularly disliked by rodents is lavender.

Simply using a lavender-scented spray or even growing a lavender plant can naturally prevent them from entering your home. For those who prefer a homemade solution, mix a quarter to a half cup of lavender flowers with one-quarter cup of water in a spray bottle, and apply it generously to areas where rodents frequent until the surface is moist but not drenched.

It's recommended to refresh this mixture monthly to keep its effectiveness in making your home unattractive to rodents, as reported by the Express.

Another aroma that rats and mice find unpleasant is citrus oil, which contains limonene—a compound present in fruits such as lemons, oranges, and grapefruits. Limonene gives off the refreshing scent often associated with many household cleaning products like soaps, detergents, and disinfectants, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Citrus oils, particularly lemon and orange, are also "very effective at keeping rats and mice away" from specific places or items. The experts suggest that due to the strength of citrus oils, they should be used sparingly or diluted with water when applied to an area or object.

Peppermint oil is touted as being "effective" in repelling rats and mice due to their dislike of the menthol scent. Rodents "associate it with danger and fear", which leads them to "avoid areas" where the oil is present or try to "stay away from it" as much as possible.

Commonly used in homemade mouse repellent recipes, peppermint oil's strong smell acts as a powerful deterrent. Just place a few drops on cotton balls and put them in places where rodents like to hide.

Chilli powder is also seen as an excellent choice for making home rat repellents because it is "inexpensive and easy to obtain at most grocery stores". Mix about two tablespoons of chilli powder per litre of water before adding it to your spray bottle or hand sanitiser container.

The experts have said: "This is an effective home remedy for getting rid of mice because it smells terrible to them and they won't stay around long enough for their sense of smell to get used to it."

Simply sprinkle some chilli powder in areas where mice are likely to visit, such as behind cupboards or under furniture.
