Exact date weather maps turn scary red as 75mph gusts loom off South West coast

by · BristolLive

A dramatic weather map reveals the UK enveloped in a dark red hue, signalling wind gusts that could surpass 75mph. The ferocious winds are expected to hit on Friday (October 25) as a band of low pressure sweeps in from the west, according to forecasters.

Following a warm spell that saw temperatures reach 16C in the Isles of Scilly and Aberporth, west Wales on Monday, the mercury is set to plummet. By Friday, it's unlikely temperatures will climb above 12C in south Wales and the South West of England, reports the Mirror.

Forecasters at Ventusky have released a weather map showing the band of pressure edging perilously close to the Cornwall and Devon coastlines. Once the system makes landfall, wind speeds are predicted to decrease but could still hit 50mph in Devon by Friday afternoon.

The Met Office has said on its website: "Starting settled on Thursday, but gradually turning wetter and windier from the west into Friday." It anticipates that the blustery conditions will persist over the weekend, which marks the end of October.

The forecast continues with: "Temperatures likely closer to average than of late with an often brisk westerly flow bringing systems in from the Atlantic. Some longer spells of rain may spread erratically southeastwards across parts of the UK at the start of the weekend, especially in the north and perhaps accompanied by windy conditions."

On Monday, more than 45mm of rain drenched the Scottish Highlands, according to the Met Office's data. Other regions also experienced heavy rainfall, despite the mild air. Nine flood warnings are currently active for parts of England, specifically targeting the River Severn. Stretching from Apperley in Gloucestershire to Pitchcroft in Worcester, these areas are on high alert after heavy rainfall has kept river levels elevated at the Diglis (Worcester) gauge.

According to the Environment Agency: "River levels are falling but remain high at the Diglis (Worcester) river gauge as a result of heavy rainfall. Consequently, the risk of flooding remains."

The ongoing situation means trouble for residents in Worcestershire, with expected property flooding at several locations. The Environment Agency detailed the areas at risk, stating: "We expect flooding to affect properties at Quay Street, South Quay, Diglis Avenue and Hood Street. Properties also affected at Pitchcroft Lane, Waterworks Road, and Newport Street, Worcester."

In the rest of the UK, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland are presently clear of any flood warnings.
