Ireland weather: Met Eireann warns of thunder and flooding as orange warning comes into effect

Status Orange weather warnings are coming into effect for three counties while another four have Status Yellow warnings today - Met Eireann have warned of harsh conditions

Met Eireann have warned of harsh conditions across the country today as a number of weather warnings are set to come into effect.

A Status Orange rain warning for Cork and Kerry came into effect at midnight, and it will stay in place until midnight tonight, while an orange rain warning in Waterford is due to come into effect at 12pm.

A Status Yellow rain warning is in effect in Clare, Limerick, Galway and Mayo at the moment.

In their orange warning, Met Eireann wrote: "Very heavy and persistent rain, with highest accumulations in mountainous areas.

"Impacts:

• River and coastal flooding
• Dangerous travelling conditions
• Travel disruption."

They have warned that thundery falls of rain may lead to flooding in parts of the country in their forecast for the next few days, as they have also predicted unsettled and rainy weather is down for the foreseeable future.

Saturday 5th October

Heavy and persistent rain will continue across the southwest and west this morning with some thundery falls leading to flooding. The rain will gradually spread further east later this afternoon with particularly heavy falls also expected across south Leinster. Elsewhere it will be overcast with patchy rain with fresh and blustery southerly winds throughout. Highs today of 14 to 17 degrees. Cloudy with widespread rain, heavy at times in the south. The rain will gradually become patchy later tonight. Southeasterly winds will be fresh to strong at times. Lows of 8 to 12 degrees.

Sunday 6th October

Sunny spells and a little scattered cloud generally but a few isolated showers will drift in over the country in a brisk southerly breeze. Highs of 14 to 17 degrees. Becoming much cloudier with showers moving in across the southwest and west later in the evening. A few showers will drift across the country later in the night but they will remain heavy across Munster and Connacht. Lowest temperatures of 5 to 10 degrees in light southerly breezes.

Monday 7th October

Becoming very unsettled overall with showers becoming widespread and heavy at times from early on. The showers will continue right through the afternoon and evening with blustery winds too. Highest temperatures of 13 to 17 degrees. Cloudy with scattered showers overnight but they will be persistent and possibly heavy at times across the south of the country. Southeasterly breezes will fall light at times overnight with lowest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees.

Tuesday 8th October

Showers for much of the country again and turning heavy at times in the north. A very cloudy day overall with winds blustery at times too. The showers will die out later in the evening but a few will linger across the north and it will remain cloudy overall. Highest temperatures of 14 to 17 degrees.

Wednesday 9th October

Staying rather unsettled with scattered showers from early on. A band of rain will push down from the northwest during the afternoon and will be heavy at times too. Highest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees with light breezes turning fresh northerlies later in the afternoon.
