The weather will turn unsettled this week with heavy rain and "noticeably cooler" conditions later this week.

Today (Tuesday October 22) will be a mainly dry day, with temperatures ranging between 12 and 15 degrees. Thre may be some patchy rain in places.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Any mist and fog will clear to leave a dry day for most today with sunny spells along with well scattered showers. Becoming dry during the evening. Highest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees in mostly light southwest breezes, freshening near west and northwest coasts during the evening.

"Dry tonight with clear spells at first though it will turn cloudier from the southwest with the chance of patchy light drizzle following towards morning. Some mist and fog patches will develop too. Lowest temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees generally in mostly light to moderate southerly breezes, fresher for western and northwestern coasts."

Tomorrow (Wednesday October 23) will be cloudy but dry, with again a chance of patchy rain. However, heavy rain will move in overnight paving the way for a rainy day on Thursday.

Met.ie says: "A good deal of cloud tomorrow with limited hazy sunny spells. A fair amount of dry weather too, however, there will be some patchy light rain and drizzle at times. Becoming breezier through the day with southerly winds gradually increasing fresh to strong and gusty, stronger for Atlantic coasts. Highest temperatures of 13 to 15 degrees.

"A mild and cloudy night with patchy light rain and drizzle for most but with more persistent rain likely developing for southwestern and western coastal areas. Temperatures not falling below 10 to 13 degrees in fresh to strong and gusty southerly winds."

Thursday (October 24) will be mild but there will be heavy rainfall and a chance of spot flooding:

"Rain in the west will become widespread through the morning and afternoon with some heavy falls likely leading to some spot flooding. Highest temperatures generally ranging between 14 and 16 degrees. Moderate to fresh and gusty southerly winds will ease light for a time before veering northwesterly and strengthening again."

The current weather forecast suggests that Friday (October 25) will be a drier day but "noticeably cooler".

Met.ie states: "There's some uncertainty in the timing but the rain in the east will clear through the day with sunny spells and showers following. Turning noticeably cooler with highest temperatures of just 9 to 13 degrees with moderate to fresh northwesterly winds."
