Former ITV I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! star Frankie Dettori has been rushed to hospital. The jockey was riding at Aqueduct racetrack in New York when he was reportedly thrown from his horse at the starting gate on Thursday, September 19.

He is said to have been able to walk to the on-course ambulance, which took him to hospital for further checks. He had been riding two-year-old filly Pretty Liza at the time.

The 53-year-old shared a photo of himself in a hospital bed on Friday, September 20. He gave fans an update on his health following his fall.

He wrote on social media: "I appreciate all the messages. I'm doing OK! I dislocated my right shoulder - my team here in the hospital have put it back together. Thanks for the messages of concern, it means a lot."

New York Racing Association communications officer Keith McCalmont tweeted: "Pretty Liza unseated [Dettori] at the gate before the start of the @TheNYRA 9th. The horse was scratched and walked off. Dettori walked to the ambulance and will attend [hospital] for further evaluation."

Dettori left the UK last year after making a U-turn on his retirement. He had announced in 2022 that he planned to retire but then changed his mind and has since relocated to the US.

Speaking last year, Dettori told how he had started off the season wanting to 'stop at the top'. But after watching footballer Cristiano Ronaldo - who he credited as 'one of the best players in the world' - end up on the bench for Portugal during the World Cup, Dettori said he 'didn't want to end up like that'.

The jockey said: "I thought, when I call it a day, things are going to ease up and I'm going to walk away into the sunset and say my last farewell to everyone - but the opposite happened. Wherever I went, I kept on winning.

"I did my farewells everywhere in Europe and I kept on winning and winning and winning. I got to August and I thought "oh my God, am I doing the right thing here?".

"But, unfortunately I told everyone I was quitting, so I kind of got myself snookered in the corner. I thought "well, I can't really carry on in England" because they have organised so many farewell tours for me, including a statue at Ascot, but I still got to get it out of my system.

"So, the only option I had was emigrating to the USA because it's my last chance to perhaps continue what I love until one day I wake up and say "enough's enough". But at the moment, because I'm still winning, the adrenaline is still there, the desire of winning is there, the public still follows me - so, I'm sorry everyone, I made a mistake, I shouldn't have said I was going to retire."

Last year, Dettori was a campmate on I'm A Celebrity. He entered the jungle as a late arrival before becoming the first contestant to be voted out of camp.
