One key task on the agenda is planting bulbs to ensure a vibrant display of spring flowers. TV gardening expert Monty Don has offered some timely advice on this front.

Speaking on a recent episode of BBC Gardener's World, the renowned horticulturist highlighted the importance of planting certain bulbs in September for optimal results. According to The Express, he advised that an assortment of spring flowers, including crocus, early irises, and some daffodils, require precise timing.

He explained: "Now we are going into September, I'm starting to think about bulbs and bulb-planting." Monty added: "And really, most bulbs are better planted in September if you can get it done. It's not essential; you can plant in October, and tulips shouldn't be planted till November and December."

He elaborated on the benefits of early autumn planting: "But daffodils, muscari and early irises and crocus and fritillaries all do best if you can get them in the ground early autumn because the ground is still warm and the roots can start growing and get good and strong."

However, the presenter did issue a word of caution that September can be a dry month, which may make the ground tough for digging and planting. Yet, he offered a solution in the shape of a nifty bulb planter gadget.

He further detailed: "A good bulb planter, if you're planting any amount of bulbs, will be worth its weight in gold and will last for years and years because the important thing with bulbs is you do need to plant them at the right depth."

While demonstrating its use, Monty stressed that in order to "get the best result", it's crucial to plant them "at least twice the depth of the bulb".
