Emmerdale star to 'die on screen' as they prepare to quit ITV soap after 16 years

The Dancing on Ice star has been in the ITV soap since 2008 and will bow out of the soap in an explosive storyline after deciding to quit the show

Roxy Shahidi, who has been a familiar face on Emmerdale for 16 years, is set to depart from the ITV soap. The actress, known for her portrayal of Leyla Harding, is reportedly looking to explore new opportunities.

Shahidi first graced the screens as Leyla in August 2008 and took a break in August 2011. She then returned for two episodes in December 2013 and then permanently again from January 2014.

Her character has been central to numerous dramatic storylines, including stints as a pole dancer, being shot, and struggling with drug addiction. It's been quite an adventure.

Roxy, married to fellow actor Arsher Ali, with whom she has a six year old daughter, has previously expressed her affection for the show, saying: "I absolutely love being in a soap like Emmerdale, because you're able to grow your character over the years. It's a process you don't really get on many other dramas.

"And I'm so lucky to play Leyla, because she's such a fun character." Now, an insider has indicated that Shahidi is ready for a change, stating: "Roxy has adored her time on the soap and has made so many happy memories since first joining.", reports the Mirror.

"The cast have become like family to her and she has grown so much as an actress, but now feels like the perfect time to spread her wings and try something new. She is really excited about her meaty exit storyline, which will see her character Leyla die on screen.

"She'd rather go out in a blaze of glory and be remembered," they disclosed to The Sun. The Mirror has approached ITV for a statement.

Roxy became a fan favourite. Earlier this year, she graced the rink as a contestant on Dancing On Ice and took to Instagram during a rehearsal break to share a nostalgic clip with her followers.

Walking towards ITV's iconic studio building, she captioned the footage: "Just popped to Emmerdale. Missing this place."

Fans have been wondering about Leyla's absence, as it's been months since they last saw her turbulent life in the Dales. As Jacob Gallagher's mother and Liam Cavanagh's ex-wife, Leyla has had her share of drama, notably her gripping drug addiction storyline.

Her last daring escapade involved an attempt to bring down drug dealer Callum, which led to her capture. The character's last appearance dates to late July, and the actress has since been involved in various projects, including ITVBe's Drama Queens, leaving viewers curious and eager for her return.
