Will Savannah Guthrie be next to leave ‘Today’? NBC insider names the two frontrunners to replace Hoda Kotb after shock exit

· New York Post

NBC executives are worried about tomorrow at “Today.”

Following Hoda Kotb’s decision to depart the long-running breakfast show, bosses are allegedly anxious that co-anchor Savannah Guthrie could follow suit.

Kotb, 60, announced her shock move on Thursday, saying she is ready “to turn the page” and will leave “Today” early next year after sitting at Guthrie’s side since 2017.

Guthrie, 50, has her contract coming up for renewal next year, and honchos are worried she may also decide it’s time to seek new horizons.

The veteran broadcaster, who is purportedly paid more than $8 million a year, has co-anchored “Today” since 2012 and steered the show through the Matt Lauer sex scandal that rocked the network seven years ago.

“Savannah’s contract is coming up next year and they want to keep her and will be doing anything they can to continue their relationship with Savannah as a means of not overhauling everything,” an NBC insider spilled to Daily Mail.

The bosses are hopeful they can persuade Guthrie to stay on and replace Kotb with another familiar face from the NBC family.

According to the insider, “the replacement will be from people who are already there rather than paying an outsider tons of money to sit with Savannah.”

The two frontrunners for the job are Craig Melvin and Laura Jarrett, according to the source.

Melvin currently serves as the news anchor on “Today” and is a co-host of the show’s third hour.

Jarrett, meanwhile, is the co-anchor of the Saturday edition of “Today.”

“NBC is looking to place one of them in Hoda’s position, whomever the audience gravitates to more will be the most likely replacement,” the insider said. “The anchors would all love the opportunity to take Hoda’s spot, Sheinelle Jones would be interested, but honestly everyone is championing for Laura or Craig.”

In fact, the insider claimed that the bosses are willing to wait as long as it takes to make an official announcement.

In addition to the main “Today” broadcast, Kotb also co-anchors the 10 a.m. hour of the show with Jenna Bush Hager.

At present, there are no replacements on the radar for “Today with Hoda and Jenna,” with the execs likely to try out guest hosts to see who best gels with Bush Hager.

“There is more leeway with Jenna and who will join her after Hoda leaves,” noted the source. “It could be a revolving door until someone sticks. The job to join Jenna is going to be a work in progress and could be anyone at this point.”

In addition to the main “Today” broadcast, Kotb also co-anchors the 10 a.m. hour of the show with Jenna Bush Hager.

Kotb shocked viewers on Thursday by announcing she was leaving “Today” — the show she has co-anchored with Guthrie since 2017.

Kotb first joined NBC as a correspondent back in 1998. She became a co-anchor of the 10 a.m. hour alongside Kathie-Lee Gifford in 2008, with the show dubbed “Today with Kathie-Lee and Hoda.”

Gifford departed the show in 2019, when she was replaced by Bush Hager.
