Watch: Cork twins find a whey into soup business

by · RTE.ie

Twin brothers from Co Cork have come up with a "soup-er" solution for using surplus whey from the family cheesemaking business.

21-year-olds James and Daniel Buckley employ it instead of stock to make their eco-friendly soups.

They got the idea from working on their grandparents' Cooleeney cheese farm in Co Tipperary every summer as teenagers, where they saw "tens of thousands of litres of whey going to waste every week".

When they learned that whey is classed as a superfood, they decided to find a way to incorporate it into a new food business - 'Souper-Fresh'.

The brothers were presented with the Little Learners Young Innovator of the Year award from the All-Ireland Business Foundation over the summer.

"Food is one of the most difficult areas to start a business, especially when you’re using a product that is seen as a waste one like whey," James said.

"We’d like to see more support from the Government in terms of grants for start-ups that are taking waste products and using them in their manufacturing."
