Netflix’s ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Season 2 Casts Miya Cech as Live-Action Toph

by · Variety

Netflix’s live-action “Avatar: The Last Airbender” is back in production for Season 2, with the streamer revealing that Miya Cech has been cast as the fan-favorite character Toph.

In a clip released as part of Netflix’s annual Geeked Week fan event, Toph’s feet are seen in closeup before she stomps down and demonstrates her earthbending.

The 17-year-old Cech is likely best known to audiences as the younger version of Ali Wong’s character in the Netflix romantic comedy “Always Be My Maybe,” released in 2019. Funnily enough, she also played a younger version of Ali Wong’s character in an episode of the Netflix series “Beef.” She also starred in Nickelodeon’s short-lived series “The Astronauts” and had a supporting role in last year’s coming-of-age comedy “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.”

Toph was first introduced in Book 2 of the original “Last Airbender” animated series. Born blind to a wealthy and overprotective family, Toph uses her earthbending to sense the world around her. She teams with Aang and his companions in a quest to master the elements and defeat the Fire Lord.

Netflix renewed their live-action adaptation of “The Last Airbender” for two more seasons shortly after the launch of the first season. As with the original, the live-action show will conclude with its third season. The cast includes Gordon Cormier, Kiawentiio, Ian Ousley, Dallas Liu, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, and Daniel Dae Kim.

Albert Kim, who developed the series and served as showrunner on Season 1, stepped down in April, with Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani set to lead the show as executive producers going forward. Kim remains an executive producer. Along with Kim, Boylan, Raisani, Dan Lin and Lindsey Liberatore executive produce on behalf of Rideback, with Michael Goi also executive producing. Goi directed the first two episodes of the series, while Raisiani directed episodes three and four. Roseanne Liang directed episodes five and six, with Jet Wilkinson directing the final two episodes of Season 1.
