‘Presence’ Trailer: A Ghost Is the Camera’s POV and Haunts a Family in Steven Soderbergh’s Eerie Horror Movie

Just in time for Halloween, Neon has pulled the curtain back on Steven Soderbergh‘s “Presence,” the prolific filmmaker’s 34th narrative feature and his first foray into supernatural horror. The first trailer gives a glimpse of how the director is handling a unique formal premise. “Presence” unfolds from a phantom’s perspective, with the camera representing its first-person view as it haunts a suburban family, cracking under the pressure.

“I wanted to find a different way to tell the story,” Soderbergh told Variety in a profile in January. The interview was published in the days ahead of the haunted house thriller’s premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. “Everything is revealed through the glimpses of this family that this presence sees. And the whole ghost genre element is a Trojan horse to show a group of people in danger of falling apart.”

Neon acquired global rights to “Presence” shortly after its festival premiere. The indie banner has since put together a crossover horror hit with “Longlegs,” with the Osgood Perkins’ thriller earning more than $100 million globally over the summer. Earlier this year, Neon also distributed horror titles like “Immaculate,” starring Sydney Sweeney, and “Cuckoo,” starring Hunter Schafer.

“Presence” stars Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan, Callina Liang, Eddy Maday and Julia Fox. Screenwriter David Koepp reunited with Soderbergh for the film, after previously penning his COVID lockdown thriller “Kimi.” Julie M. Anderson and Ken Meyers are producers.

“Presence” will come to theaters on Jan. 24, 2025. Watch the trailer for the film below.
