Chappell Roan is the voice behind one of the biggest hits of this year, Hot To Go, but it’s her constant complaining about fame that has left fans frustrated.

The 26-year-old, who has been making music since she was 17, has endured a massive rise to fame this year thanks to her debut album The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess, which has become a critical and chart success almost one year after it was originally released. The singer, real name Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, has hit the headlines in recent months thanks to her raising her voice over issues that have impacted her since becoming famous, but some fans feel she’s being ungrateful and have since labelled her ‘Chappell Moan’.

Here, we take a look at Chappell’s biggest moans over the last year…

‘Overwhelmed soul’ after performing to fans

The singer irked her fanbase when in September last year, she admitted to feeling overwhelmed with her sudden rise to fame, and said it was “dramatic”. Speaking to Vanity Fair, Chappell said her tour schedule was relentless, and it was “pretty exhausting just interacting with so many people a night.”

While she insisted she “enjoyed” touring, Chappell said her fans “hadn’t done anything wrong”, but she was just tired and her “soul was just so overwhelmed.” She dubbed it an “emotional rollercoaster”, and hated playing “the character all the time”, but said the shows were “so fun for me”. But she couldn’t stop herself from upsetting fans further when she added: “The worst part is that it's sometimes, or most of the time, overwhelming and exhausting.”

Anger over ‘freak’ fans

In July, Chappell said she was creeped out after “freak” fans allegedly began to follow her, and left her uncomfortable. During an interview on The Comment Section podcast, she said fans “follow me and know where my parents live, and where my sister works. All this weird s**t.” She revealed that she had a plan to quit her career and stop making music if fans gave her “stalker vibes” or made her feel like her loved ones were in danger.

During the interview, she also complained about not being able to do drugs in public now she was famous. '”That's what I miss. Just like, rolling up, being a f***ing freak at the bar or making out with someone at the bar. I miss frolicking, obviously, because now I'm self-conscious to frolic,” she confessed.

Slams ‘weird’ fans in social media rant

Last month, Chappell hit the headlines when she launched into a furious tirade about being targeted by “weird” fans who had bullied her online and stalked her family. “If you saw a random woman on the street, would you yell at her from your car window?” she fumed. “Would you harass her in public? Would you stalk her family? Would you follow her around? Would you try to dissect her life and bully her online?”

She said she refused to accept “stalking and harassment” as normal behaviour from her devoted fanbase. “I don't care that abuse and harassment, stalking, whatever, is a normal thing to do to people who are famous or a little famous, whatever,” Chappell said, as she wanted fans to respect her boundaries.

Frustration over not being taken seriously

The singer spoke to Interview magazine last month and bemoaned her chart success, as she claimed she didn’t care if she had hit singles because it was “fleeting”. She explained: “Like, my career doesn't mean anything more now that I have a charting album and song. If anything, I'm just like, ‘F*** you guys for not seeing what actually matters.’”

She later defended her comments in a video on TikTok, and in an interview with Rolling Stone, said she was angry that people were only just beginning to recognise her talents. “What's so infuriating is how people are just now taking me seriously. Like, ‘You know what, b***h? I've been doing this s**t and you're just now catching up.’ Part of me hopes I never have a hit again because then no one will ever expect anything from me again,” she fumed.

Spat with paparazzi at the VMAs

Chappell made sure she was the centre of attention at the MTV Music Video Awards earlier this month after she was involved in an expletive-laden incident with a photographer on the red carpet. The singer, who wore a medieval inspired outfit complete with a sword for the star-studded bash in New York, was caught on film getting into a brief war of words with a male photographer. In footage on social media, the man could be heard shouting, “Shut the f**k up,” which prompted Chappell to turn around and reply: “YOU shut the f*** up!”

Threatens to quit after being approached by fans

Speaking to The Face, Chappell admitted she would quit her career in the music industry if it became too dangerous to continue. She recalled an incident at an airport in the US in which she was approached by two fans who wanted her to sign posters “and s**t” at 5.30am. “I know they're not fans. I said no. I was like, ’I don't sign anything at the airport, I'm sorry,’” she said.

“(One fan) follows me to the TSA line, starts yelling at me and everyone just turns and looks. He's like, ’You should really humble yourself. Do you know where you are right now? Don't forget where you came from,’” Chappell shared, as she warned fans: “I told myself, if this ever gets dangerous, I might quit. It's dangerous now, and I'm still going. But that part is not what I signed up for.”
