In his 2023 Netflix documentary, Heart of Invictus, a five-part series, the Duke of Sussex spoke openly about the profound impact of losing his mother, Princess Diana, at a young age, and the psychological toll of his military service in Afghanistan.

In the documentary, he says he didn’t have the set-up around him to have help. He claims there was no support structure or network to identify what was going on with him after this happened, within the royal family, Hello! reports.
In a very raw moment, Harry shared his realisation about the necessity of professional help and after he first considered therapy properly he ended up in the foetal position. He said: "Unfortunately, like me, the first time you really consider therapy is when you're lying on the floor in the foetal position, probably wishing that you'd dealt with some of this stuff previously. And that's what I really want to change." Sharing hard truths, the Prince highlighted the desperate need for better mental health support, especially for those in similar situations.
The Duke also reflected on his tour of Afghanistan, revealing the experiences there acted as a catalyst for his emotional struggles. “After returning from Afghanistan in 2012, there was an unravelling, with triggers from my childhood surfacing,” he explained. “Losing my mum at such a young age caused trauma that was never addressed. I suppressed those feelings and, like many young people, never really spoke about them. But when it all came fizzing out, I was overwhelmed, feeling everything rather than being numb.”
The series features a camera crew that follows Harry and Meghan during the 2022 Invictus Games in the Netherlands. As executive producer, Harry is involved in a multi-million-pound deal with Netflix, following the Harry & Meghan documentary. The documentary aims to spotlight those who have come through so much and their resilience, whilst also showing all the preparation that goes into the Invictus Games which have long since been a passion of Harry’s, the first event took place in 2014 and this year marked a decade since they games started.
