Spain floods: Brit recalls horrifying final screams of his neighbours before they died in 'urban river'
Jerome Torres said Valencia still looks like something out of an "apocalyptic" horror film one week after the flooding started there - and now Barcelona is on high alert
by Bradley Jolly · The MirrorA British expat in Valencia told of hearing his neighbours's final screams before they died in an "urban river" amid the flooding.
Jerome Torres, 49, was trapped in his fourth-floor flat with his partner Pablo when water levels become dangerously high last week. Although three people on Jerome's street were killed by the floods, a 90-year-old neighbour miraculously survived by standing on her furniture as water rushed into her home.
But she was trapped for more than four hours before the water began to subside and her neighbours could carry her to safety. The carnage has left Valencia looking like something out of an "apocalyptic" horror film, Jerome said.
More than 200 people have been killed by the torrential flooding. The floods swept through the city and upended nearly everything in sight, leaving homes and businesses destroyed and streets caked in a thick layer of mud.
Jerome said: "The day that we came back and saw the devastation, it was completely unrecognisable. It felt like an American Hollywood film. It was apocalyptic... The president of the region was on the radio saying there was no risk of flooding, so we thought we were safe. It was a death trap for many."
Jerome and Pablo were able to take shelter at Pablo's aunt's house after they were evacuated. Jerome told The Sun he is unhappy with the authorities for failing to warn Valencians of the dangers the storm posed.
And, on Sunday, mud pies and empty bottles were hurled at King Felipe and his wife, Queen Letizia, who were visiting the impacted region. Queen Letizia could be seen with mud speckled over her face, while one of the bodyguards escorting the royals in Paiporta had seemingly been hit by an object as he had a cut on his forehead, which caused blood to run down his face.
The furious crowd shouted "murderers" and other insults at the royals and government officials like Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez during the visit on Sunday.
