Gavin and Stacey’s Joanna Page surprised Strictly Come Dancing fans as she appeared in the studio audience to cheer on her unlikely pal.

The Welsh actress, 47, was in the star-studded audience to support GoCompare advert star Wynne Evans, who took to the dancefloor on Saturday alongside his professional dance partner Katya Jones. Joanna, best known for her portrayal of the Barry Island bride Stacey in the hit BBC comedy, shared a snap of her backstage waiting to cheer on Wynne, who was performing a samba to Tom Jones’ hit Help Yourself.

Joanna looked gorgeous in a pink dress as she smiled alongside her husband James. “Off to Strictly to support @wynneevans,” she wrote on Instagram. She was then captured smiling and cheering as Wynne took to the floor to perform and looked on proudly as he received glowing praise from judges Craig Revel-Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, Shirley Ballas and Anton Du Beke.

Joanna and Wynne’s friendship first began when they were recruited to host the BBC Cymru series Wynne Evans and Joanna Page: Lost at Sea earlier this year. The show saw the duo explore their native Welsh coastline, and they were spotted filming in locations including Tenby and Saundersfoot over the summer.

The new programmes include a brand-new adventure with Wynne Evans and Joanna Page, as the duo embark on a fun-filled journey along the Welsh coastline. “Fuelled by their friendship, and shared passions of the sea, food and love of adventure, in each episode we’ll join the pair on board as they explore the spectacular Welsh coastline by sea,” a BBC statement revealed. “They’ll discover everything from secret coves to seafood recipes, famous ports to fabulous people and we’ll get a sneak peek into the lives of two of Wales’ most beloved stars.”

Wynne also got the biggest laugh of Saturday night’s show after he poked fun at former footballer Paul Merson. After performing with Karen Hauer, the Sky Sports pundit headed upstairs in the studio to chat with Claudia Winkleman, but he was interrupted by Wynne. “Can I just congratulate Karen, right? Because I've been sharing a dressing with Mers for a fortnight, and he still thinks my name is Gwyn, so how she taught him anything is beyond me,” he quipped, as his fellow celebs and pro dancers erupted into raucous laughter.
