Netflix fans think this horror film has 'best ever' opening scene despite abysmal Rotten Tomatoes score

A divisive horror movie has just arrived on Netflix and, while it has an eye-wateringly low Rotten Tomatoes score, fans still agree it has possibly the best opening scene of all time.

Horror fans have applauded a movie for having the “best opening scene” of any film in the genre - and it’s just dropped on Netflix in time for Halloween.

The film in question has a shockingly low 14% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a slightly better Popcornmeter score of 37%.

The mystery horror film Ghost Ship was released in 2002, but scary movie fans still remember its violent and horrifying opening scene.

The movie, directed by Steve Beck from a screenplay by Mark Hanlon and John Pogue, is still famous for its beginning - even if the rest of the picture failed to live up to expectations.

The synopsis for Ghost Ship reads: “In a remote region of the Bering Sea, a boat salvage crew discovers the eerie remains of a grand passenger liner thought lost for more than 40 years.

“But once onboard the eerie, cavernous ship, the crew of the Arctic Warrior discovers that the decaying vessel is anything but deserted.

“It's home to something more deadly and horrific than anything they've encountered in all their years at sea.”

During the film, the crew become stranded when their tugboat explodes and must seek refuge on the Ghost Ship.

They are then forced to confront the tragedy that happened on board, leaving nearly all the passengers dead.

However, viewers already know about the horrific catastrophe that happened years earlier, as they see it in the first scene.

The opening of the film sees passengers laughing and partying as live music plays, while an unknown person in the shadows is seen sabotaging some of the ship's equipment.

Suddenly, a metal cable snaps and flies through the dance floor, cutting the passengers in half and beheading others.

Only a little girl, who was too short to be dissected by the cable, is spared and is left screaming as she looks on in horror at the bloody scene.

While the movie might have gone downhill from there, many fans still regard the chilling scene as being worthy of the Horror Hall of Fame.

"I watched this as a kid and I either forgot or didn't know the name, but I can never forget the opening scene,” one person shared. “It was permanently seared into my brain as a child, I was so freaked out."

Another added: "This childhood movie put me in therapy for years."

A third reasoned: “I used to watch this movie as a kid and i always thought it was awesome, until i watched it again 15 years later and realized it's kinda boring. Only really good part was the opening scene.” (sic)

While another fan argued that the film’s merits lie beyond just its opening scene, writing: “this movie is so underrated! The opening scene is one of the best of all the horror films I've seen. this will always be one of my favorite movies.” (sic)
