Stunning UK town with a castle, cobbled streets and pub on nearly every corner is perfect for an autumn trip
The beautiful hillside town is home to an array of local pubs, independent shops and an enchanted castle
by Talya Honebeek, Lauren Cole-Lomas · The MirrorJust a 40-minute drive from Surrey lies a picturesque hillside town once cherished by a former Tudor queen. Anne of Cleves was known to have owned a house in Lewes, Sussex, but intriguingly, she never resided there, missing out on the charm of this stunning location.
Lewes is a delightful town that boasts a pub almost at every turn, coupled with fantastic independent shops and a magical castle. With its cobbled streets and half-timbered buildings dating back centuries, this town exudes an abundance of charm, making it an ideal spot for an autumn day trip.
Brimming with history, a visit to Lewes feels like stepping back in time. The Grange Gardens, originally built in 1542 by William Newton as part of a grand manor house, are a testament to this, reports Surrey Live.
This tranquil location is perfect for a visit any time of the year, but as the leaves turn golden and fall, autumn seems to be the ideal time. The ruins of a medieval monastery still stand and can be explored, set within beautiful rolling grounds.
Lewes Castle, a proud feature of the town, stands tall with its stone towers and the Barbican House Museum. Dating back to 1066, the castle's steep steps lead to an incredible viewpoint where visitors can truly appreciate the beauty of the Ouse Valley.
The Anne of Cleeves Museum is a treasure trove of Tudor and Elizabethan history, featuring a traditional kitchen, parlour, and a bedroom complete with a four-poster bed. Kids will be thrilled to don Royal attire and explore the garden.
While the house typically shuts its doors during winter, it's still worth admiring from the outside.
The castle remains accessible, boasting panoramic views and unique cannon gardens. The museum also hosts trails and half-term activities, making it an ideal spot for children.
For those who appreciate local produce, the Lewes farmers and flea markets are a must-visit. They offer a variety of goods sourced from nearby farms, including cheeses, organic beef, artisan sourdough bread, homemade cakes and puddings, along with plenty of vegan and gluten-free options.
With around 17 pubs to choose from, popular picks include The Swan Inn, The Green Man and the Lewes Arms. For overnight stays, The White Hart offers a cosy retreat.
