Shetland season 9 cast in full as BBC drama welcomes Poldark and Outlander stars
Shetland is back on Wednesday and when a woman goes missing with her nine-year-old son, the detective duo set out on a case that blurs the line between the personal and professional.
by Katie Palmer · The MirrorShetland returns to BBC One this week and the first part of the six-episode series begins with a jittery young man holding a shotgun. In front of him is his brother's dead body and detectives have him surrounded.
Later that night, DI McIntosh attends a friend's birthday party and witnesses an argument between a husband and wife. Their nine-year-old son tells the detective his parents are splitting up.
Before they leave, the wife arranges a meeting with Tosh as she wants to speak to her about something important. However, when Tosh arrives for the meeting, there is no sign of the mother and son.
The episodes will air weekly on Wednesdays at 9pm as the mystery unravels as to who is responsible for the mother and son's disappearance.

DI Ruth Calder - Ashley Jensen
Ashley Jensen is a 55-year-old Scottish actress known for her roles as Maggie Jacobs in Extras and Christina McKinney in Ugly Betty.
She also played the title character in the Agatha Raisin series and starred in the Ricky Jervais hit, After Life.
She is married to Vera star Kenny Doughty, with the pair having tied the knot in 2023.
Previously, she was married to actor Terence Beesley for 10 years, between 2007 and 2017.
DI 'Tosh' McIntosh - Alison O'Donnell
Alison O'Donnell is a Scottish TV, stage and film actress known for Feel the Force and Holby City.
She played a lead role in My Romantic History, a play at the Edinburgh Fringe.
She is in a relationship with Scottish playwright D.C. Jackson and they have two children together.
DC Sandy Wilson - Steven Robertson
Steven Robertson is a 47-year-old Scottish actor and Shetland is filmed near where he was born.
He is also known for his roles in Inside I'm Dancing, Being Human, Luther and The Bletchley Circle.
He currently lives in Hertfordshire with his wife Charlotte Allam and daughter.
Sgt Billy McCabe - Lewis Howden
Lewis Howden is a Scottish actor who has previously starred in Meet You In Scotland, You Were There and Annika.
Before his time on Shetland he featured in Boxer and Still Game.
Donnie Russell - Angus Miller
Angus Miller's acting career dates back to 2016 when he starred in a couple of short films.
His first big TV role was in Teacup Travels, and he went on to star in Guilt, The Gold and Natural Causes.
The Rev Alan Calder - Steven Miller
Steven Miller is a 42-year-old Scottish actor best known for playing Lenny Lyons in Casualty.
His other credits include Holby City, The Bill and Payback.
Malcolm Kidd - Stuart Campbell
Stuart Campbell is a 26-year-old Scottish actor who can be seen in The Winter King and The Chemistry of Death.
His other credits include SAS Rogue Heroes, Baptiste and Outlander.
Ian Bett - Robert Jack
Robert Jack is an actor, director and writer who played Jacko in Gary Tank Commander.
He has also starred in The Last Czars, Princess Mirror-Belle and Succession.
Annie Bett - Sarah MacGillivray
Sarah MacGillivray's acting career dates back to 2014 and she had a minor role in Outlander in 2016.
She has starred in a number of short films and played Susan in The Lost King.
John Harris - Vincent Regan
Vincent Regan is an actor and director known for Snow White and the Huntsman, 300 and Troy.
He has been married to actress Amelia Curtis since 2001 and they have three children.
In 2019 he played Edward Despard in Poldark.
Euan Rossi - Ian Hart
Ian Davies, better known by his stage name Ian Hart, is a 60-year-old English actor.
He is best known for his roles as Father Beocca in The Last Kingdom and Professor Quirrell in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
He is married to Lynn Hart and has two children.
Frank Kirk - Richard Thomson
Richard Thomson has previously starred in This Is Going To Hurt and EastEnders.
His other notable credits include Ghosts, Lovesick and Fit.
Joni Connal - Gemma McElhinney
Gemma McElhinney may be recognised for playing PC Janice Hogg in the detective series Karen Pirie.
She also had a small role in Outlander and Two Doors Down.
Tara Kirk - Nalini Chetty
Nalini Chetty was born in Edinburgh and between 2011 and 2016 she played series regular Zinnie Hassoun in BBC drama River City.
As a writer she has worked with BBC Scotland, CBeebies, C4 and Radio 4. She lives near Glasgow and has two children.
Noah Bett - Jacob Ferguson
Jacob Ferguson is making his acting debut in Shetland and not much is known about him at this time.
