by Amelia Ward · The MirrorPrince Harry and Meghan Markle tied the knot in May 2018, with Anna Wintour giving a blunt three-word description of the actress's £265,000 wedding dress.
Megan, 43, wore an incredible gown, created by Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy. Breaking away from Royal tradition, the mother-of-two opted for a sleek style, instead of the usual detail and lace chosen by other brides in the family.
Giving her verdict on the dress at the time, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour said it was 'chic, grown-up and sophisticated. One of the most powerful figures in the industry, Anna's opinion is everything in the fashion world, with her glowing review of Meghan's dress likely to have been a huge compliment to the bride.
Anna commented on Meghan’s wedding dress: "It was sophisticated, it was chic, it was grown-up," she enthused.
She added: "It was an English designer, albeit one who worked for a French house, which in a way was a message to the world: 'Yes, I’m from somewhere else, but I belong’. I thought she looked fantastic."
Meanwhile, designer Clare said it was "just a pleasure" creating the dress, explaining she and Meghan struck up a "personal" friendship through the designing process.
Speaking at the 2023 Bazaar At Work Summit in London, she said: "It was just a pleasure to create in this very, very private way."
Adding: "It was just the two of us for so long, and it became this very personal girlfriend relationship."
Speaking to reporters at Kensington Palace, Clare explained: "It was an extraordinary moment. It was an incredible thing to be part of such an historic moment and, in fact, to have the opportunity to work with her."
She also told how she and Meghan worked together to make the dress, with the pair adding a sweet extra detail to the gown from the couple's first date.
She added: "We basically sewed it into the hem of the wedding dress, so she was the only one that knew that it was there. It was a little blue gingham check. It was the perfect personal memento that was secretly hidden inside the dress."
Meghan had previously spoken about the symbolic piece of fabric in the dress. In HBO documentary Queen of the World, she shared: "Somewhere in here there’s a piece of blue fabric that’s stitched inside – it was my something blue. It’s fabric from the dress that I wore on our first date."
