Good Morning Britain star Laura Tobin says the ITV team will always rally around the much-loved presenter

Good Morning Britain star Laura Tobin has opened up about supporting Kate Garraway behind the scenes - and praised her ability to “always look out for everyone.” Presenter Kate, 57, returned to the ITV show in February after her husband Derek Draper died in January following a heartbreaking battle with long Covid.

Asked if they had rallied around the TV favourite, Laura said: “Always. She is amazing, and I’ve just bought a house and we’re doing renovations, and she is aways asking me: ‘How is the house going?’ And I just think, how do you even remember what’s going on in other people’s lives? She’s always looking out for everyone else, and we’re trying to look out for her. She just seems to soldier on.

“She’s still crazy - when we look at her dressing room before she arrives it’s clean - and 30 seconds later it looks like a bomb has gone off. She’s like a calamity, but she’s super smart, and she remembers every interview she’s ever done and everyone she’s ever spoken to. I think people might underestimate her ability and intelligence, but as soon as the cameras roll, she’s on it.”

Last month saw Kate accept her third National Television Award for Best Authored Documentary after the cameras captured Derek’s final year for Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story. And the star fought back tears on stage as she spoke of her family’s battle to cope with their loss. She said: “I genuinely did not expect this, goodness me. this is a bittersweet one, isn’t it?

“It’s very bitter to be here with the gorgeous Darcey and Billy. I promised them they didn’t have to say anything. “We’re halfway through the first year of firsts, really. A first Easter and birthday without Derek. It’s so strange to be here for the first Television Awards without him.” She went on to promise to continue to fight for the rights of carers “for Derek.”
