‘Barmy and lovable’ British comedy with a crazy premise you won’t see coming just dropped on Netflix
A darkly charming new comedy-drama has just dropped on Netflix starring a beloved Irish comedian and actress with a premise you won’t expect
by Lucas Hill-Paul · The MirrorNetflix embraced the Halloween spirit this week with plenty of frightening features on offer, but there are still plenty of new options for subscribers who aren’t in the spooky spirit.
With more dark and cold nights approaching, streamers and film buffs will be looking for the perfect film picks to warm their cockles over the coming weeks.
Look no further than the streaming giant, as it has just added a delightfully unconventional romantic-comedy that’s ideal for those recovering from the Halloween festivities.
Starring Irish comic and actress Aisling Bea, this is a rom-com like no other and scored favourable reviews when it premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival earlier this year.
It’s now available for your streaming pleasure at no extra cost for Netflix members.
And Mrs stars Bea as a recent would-be widow Gemma, whose fiance dies just before they’ve planned to get married.
Per a synopsis, “when [the] reluctant bride-to-be's fiance drops dead, she insists on marrying him anyway - vowing to overcome public opinion, the law of the land, and her loved one's objections.”
You read that correctly - this film starts out with one half of the central couple already dead, so expect plenty more surprises along the way.
Also starring American greats Billie Lourd and Colin Hanks, a huge array of British stars make up the supporting cast, from Susan Wokoma, Omari Douglas and Nish Kumar, to acting royalty Dame Harriet Walter and Doctor Who favourite Arthur Darvill.
Cath Clarke of The Guardian called And Mrs a “barmy Brit romcom” with a “knockout” cast.
She continues by describing Bea as an “absolute hoot. When Hollywood stars play ordinary civilians, there’s often a slumming-it quality to their performances, but Bea is funny and real, sarky and very likable as Gemma.”
Common Sense Media wrote: “The premise of And Mrs is a touch bizarre - a woman determined to marry her dead fiancé - but somehow the movie sidesteps anything too uncomfortable or schmaltzy, instead offering plenty of humor and some well-earned emotional moments.”

While a Letterboxd user who caught the EIFF premiere listed plenty of winning attributes, including “lots of heart, humanity and hope” and “a celebration of love, friendship and family in equal parts”.
