It's set to be a momentous occasion when Katy Perry takes to the field for the Australian Football League pre-game show.

The pop icon, 39, will warm up the crowd at the major sporting event Down Under as the league's Grand Final is decided. However, in order to land the gig, Katy is said to have faced pushback on performing her newest tunes. It has been claimed the songstress was asked to avoid singing songs from her latest release, 143, which hasn't been a huge success.

Instead, the league wanted Katy to focus on her better known releases, including Firework and Roar. Katy was apparently unprepared to miss out the new album entirely and pushed to include two hits to her set. In the end, it's claimed the two parties came to a compromise, with one new song making the cut.

Journalist Tom Morris explained the issues on Monday on SEN Breakfast alongside former AFL stars Kane Cornes and Nathan Buckley. "You know when you go to a concert and maybe they’re old and all you want is their good stuff. You just want their greatest hits. That’s what the AFL have requested with the Katy Perry. And she’s gone, clearly, I want to promote some of my new music," Cornes said.

Buckley said the AFL couldn't pick and choose if they didn't write the request into the contract. It's thought Katy will be paid $5m AUD (£2.56m) for her short performance at the event. In total, she'll sing five songs during her set.

Katy previously teased she will be joined on the stage at the MCG by an Australian pop star. While she stopped short of naming them, she revealed they are a 'scorpio'.

In a statement announcing her performance, Katy said: "I’m so excited to be back in Australia and back at the mighty MCG to perform in front of 100,000 of the best and loudest fans in the world at this year’s Toyota AFL Grand Final." Last year saw Robbie Williams perform the eagerly awaited slot.

Katy recently opened up about her home life, explaining er family is very "loud" and filled with energy. She admitted her and Orlando Bloom have "hot and fast" arguments. She labelled the pair, who share four-year-old Daisy, the "chaos crew". Speaking to Apple Music's Zane Lowe, she confessed: "Orlando and I, when we argue, we argue kinda hot and fast and then cool really quickly. It’s like, ‘La la la la la, I love you. Alright, let’s move on."

She added that the "ego" they both sometimes gets in the way, too. "He's a real sage," she continued. "We both have parts of ourselves. There's two parts of us, our highest good, and then our carnal, material self. Ego. When the ego is running the show, then it's like, 'Whoa.' But when that's in check, then we're both something else."
