'My fiancé's grandma refuses to come to our wedding for a bonkers reason – it's selfish'

A woman has claimed her future grandmother-in-law has refused to attend her upcoming wedding for a 'selfish' reason - and people online are baffled by her demands

When you get married, you'll likely want to have your loved ones there to celebrate the occasion.

Most wedding guest lists are made up of family members from both sides of the couple tying the knot, as well as friends, and in some cases colleagues and even pets that make an adorable appearance. A wedding is the perfect time for family to get together and celebrate the bond between a couple, and it's usually understood that the focus for the day should be on the pair getting married - not on anyone else.

But one woman has said her wedding planning has hit a roadblock because of her fiancé's grandmother, who has made an outlandish request ahead of the big day.

The bride-to-be is due to get married in around 20 days and has just been told that her future grandma-in-law doesn't want to attend because the wedding is on the same day as her birthday. And if they want her to come, they'll have to make sure she can share in the celebration - by bringing a cake just for her.

In a post on Reddit, the woman revealed: "We're about 20 days out until our wedding! We were visiting my future parents-in-law to look for photos for a little photo wall and got to talking about wedding planning with my future mother-in-law. She then tells us that her mum doesn't want to come to the wedding because it's on her birthday."

She explained she knew that their special day also fell on one of her fiancé's aunt's birthdays, but her husband-to-be had no idea it was his grandma's birthday too because he wasn't close with the "miserable" woman growing up.

The couple have planned to have a small sign placed by the guestbook inviting people to wish a happy birthday to the aunt, which they said could be adapted to also include the grandma. But the groom's mum claimed this wasn't enough, and a "small cake" made especially for the birthday girl would be better.

To make matters worse, the grandmother in question has angered so many of her family members throughout the years that she can't actually sit next to any of them during the ceremony. The bride said: "At this point, I hope she doesn't show up because, even me, who believes family comes before almost anything, cannot stand her."

No I am not getting a birthday cake. Also, seating woes.

Commenters on the post were baffled by the grandma's request, with many of them saying that having her birthday doesn't mean she can't attend the wedding - as birthday celebrations can just be moved to the day before or after.

One person said: "Is there some law that says you can't attend a wedding on your birthday? I'm unaware of that one. Personally, I would take it as a compliment. She needs to stop being such a diva."

As another added: "I cannot imagine caring a single bit that my grandchild’s wedding was on my birthday - except to think it was pretty cool! Adults' birthdays are not show-stopping occasions."

While a third posted: "I mean, she can stay home if she doesn't want to go to a wedding on her birthday. But she's going to be all alone because the whole family is going to the wedding."
