Mohamed Al Fayed had a remarkable rise to fame from living in poverty to heading up Britain's top department store - but his life was also marred in scandal.

The late Harrods boss achieved a £1.3billion fortune for his family before his death last August, which has seen his four children fight over their incredible inheritance, which includes an impressive property empire. Now more than a year after his passing aged 94, more than 20 female former employees have spoken out to the BBC as part of a special investigation, coming forward with allegations of sexual assault and physical violence at properties in London and Paris.

Five of the women alleged they had been raped by him. The new BBC documentary claims Al Fayed deployed an army of aides to silence his alleged victims and used his power and wealth to evade justice.

The billionaire started with humble beginnings, selling fizzy drinks before selling sewing machines. It was when he started to build a career in real estate that his luck turned, establishing his family's fortune in the Middle East before moving to Europe.

His children have inherited his 17th Century Barrow Green Court estate, and swanky apartments overlooking Hyde Park in London, a Scottish castle and also several in New York. Al Fayed had son Dodi, who tragically died in a car crash in Paris with Princess Diana in 1997, with first wife Samira Khashoggi in 1955. They divorced a year later.

He went on to marry model Heini Wathén in 1985 and they had four children together - Jasmine, born 1980, Karim, born 1983, Camilla, born 1985, and Omar, born 1987. Eldest son Dodi was a film producer and worked for the family's company, Allied Stars. He had a brief romance with Princess Diana, which is said to have been orchestrated by his father.

After Diana separated from King Charles in 1992, she began to form a new life for herself away from the Royal Family. She used her new-found freedom and the huge interest surrounding her as a platform for vital charity work, raising awareness of topics her in-laws shied away from.

But in doing this, she crossed paths with Al Fayed, who was named as one of the richest men in the world at the time. While it's unknown where they first met specifically, they were often in the same circles as he sponsored many of the charities she was involved with.

His surviving four children have reportedly been embroiled in a Succession-style battle over their inheritance, MailOnline reports. Daughter Camilla Fayed, 39, pleaded not guilty to a charge of robbing her brother of his iPhone earlier this year in May.

She was charged with robbery after allegedly ordering her bodyguards to steal the phone from Omar Fayed at their Surrey mansion. Three men - her husband Mohamad Esreb, Matthew Littlewood, and Andrew Bott - are accused of a single count of robbery in relation to the alleged incident. A trial date has been set for February 25.

Camilla runs vegan restaurant Farmacy, which is enjoyed by celebrities including Gwyneth Paltrow, in Notting Hill, while Omar, also vegan, was a founding director of the company before he reportedly left the board in 2017.

It appears there is tension between Camilla's younger brother and her husband, with the pair allegedly getting into a physical fight at the Surrey estate during lockdown in 2020. Omar is said to be claiming 100,000 in damages over the alleged assault by Camilla and her Syrian businessman husband - claims they have denied.

She told the court that her brother is a heavy drug user - an allegation he also rejects. Omar previously said in 2021: "It seems his influence upon Camilla and in my family has not necessarily been a favourable one. Before they were together, my sister and I were very close. Of course, it's sad and unfortunate."

Speaking to MailOnline, he added: "Dad's wish has always been that everybody at the family level is equal, does what they can and plays a part in organising the fortune that he has built."

Omar was set to become the next Harrods chairman but he instead chose to resign in 2009 after reportedly being concerned that it was not the "ethical workspace" he wanted. The business was later sold to the Qatari royal family for a reported £1.5billion.

The son is an environmentalist who launched his own social media platform called EarthX, which seeks to focus a user's mind when posting using a 3D globe. He is also behind the Swiss-based Erth Space Technical Ecosystem Enterprises.

Al Fayed's eldest daughter Jasmine is the owner of a fashion brand, with celebrities including Victoria Beckham wearing her designs. Jasmine is married to Welsh heavy metal artist Noah Johnson.

By the age of 24, the daughter had her own Harrods boutique, but she slammed claims this was due to nepotism. She told The Guardian in 2005: "No, never, because at the end of the day it's a family business and it's always been a part of my dream to put a piece of me in it. I've always been involved in it and, in a sense, groomed to, you know.

"It wasn't anything to do with nepotism; I don't know why people would say that." Al Fayed's eldest son is Karim, who largely keeps out of the public eye.

Karim, who is deaf after contracting meningitis as a toddler, set up the Karim Fayed Hearing Centre in 2009, which helps people with mild hearing loss. It offers free tests and makes bespoke hearing aids.
