The early noughties aesthetic is well and truly back in fashion, and Netflix is about to jump on the trend with its upcoming horror film, Time Cut.

Starring Outer Banks' Madison Bailey and Ginny & Georgia's Antonia Gentry, the film follows a teenager in 2024 who slips back in time to try and prevent the murder of her older sister from unfolding. It is directed by Hannah Macpherson, the mind behind T@gged, and written by Macpherson and Michael Kennedy (Freaky).

While depicting time travel on the big screen is nothing new, the year at which the protagonists travel to has raised some eyebrows.

The official synopsis reads: "A teen in 2024 accidentally time-travels to 2003, days before a masked killer murders her sister. Can she change the past without destroying the future?".

News of a time travel film being set in a year that is recent memory for many millennials has been a tough pill to swallow for some. An announcement teasing the upcoming film posted to Netflix's official Facebook page has sparked a flurry of concerned comments from those who remember the year well.

One commenter shared their emotional turmoil, writing: "Struggling to cope with the fact that going back to 2003 is considered 'back in time'." Another jumped in with: "2003 wasn’t that long ago. Making it sound like it was 50 years ago."

"2003 was that long ago?" asked another stunned Netflix fan, while a fellow commenter claimed that 2003 "feels like last year." Another, along with a crying emoji, wrote: "I was in college in 2003."

Others however shared their excitement for the upcoming film. "My two favourite actresses in the same movie!" shared one excited fan, echoing a sentiment shared by many, with another chiming in with: "Omg I love these two."

Time Cut will be available to stream on the platform from October 30. Elsewhere in the cast are Griffin Gluck from Locke & Key and Virgin River's Michael Shanks.
