When you think of autumn holidays, the seaside might not come at the top of your list. But maybe it should because there is one gorgeous little seaside town that has everything you could want from a cosy getaway, including a castle.

For the fourth year running, this little seaside town has been voted the best in the UK by Which?- and it’s easy to see why.

Bamburgh is nestled in Northumberland, with Bamburgh Castle standing proud atop a rocky crag overlooking the drifting sand dunes and seascape. This Grade 1 Heritage building was once the historic capital of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria. Believed to have been occupied for over 10,000 years the castle has evolved from a wooden palisade to the incredible fortress it is today.

Just a stone's throw from the castle in Bamburgh village is the gorgeous Lord Crewe pub which offers up seasonal fare. Lord Crewe specialises in luxurious fresh seafood dishes, with a strong focus on high-quality and local produce

It’s not just the castle that offers a rich history in Bamburgh; The RNLI Grace Darling is a museum dedicated to Grace Horsley Darling, who participated in the rescue of nine men from a tragic shipwreck, and rose to fame as one of Victorian England’s bravest heroines. The Museum offers a look into the and story and is perfect for a rainy day’s wandering.

For people who prefer a bit of dark tourism, the Bamburgh Ossuary is unmissable. Located in the crypt under St Aidan’s Church, this ossuary is the final resting play of people from as early as the 6th century. Here you can discover the fascinating story of their excavation and learn some of their histories.

But if you’d rather have a relaxed wander through the streets, stopping in at shops and eateries along the way then never fear - Bamburgh has that too.

The idyllic village of Seahouses is perched on the coast to the south of Bamburgh and a wander to it makes a perfect autumnal walk along the coastline.

It is a six-mile, there-and-back walk, making this a perfect day out, stopping for a bite to eat and explore when you reach Seahouses. You can either walk south along the beach, which can add an extra element of fun as you splash in the waves, or you can walk along the St Oswalds way which takes you on a path through fields and quiet country roads - a good option for a calmer ramble.
