Singer James Blunt has recalled the horrific moment his dad cut his fingers off with a lawnmower - and he was sent to try and find them.

To make matters worse, he explained how he was partially responsible as he detailed his hunt for his father Charles' missing digits. The 50-year-old appeared on Sunday Brunch to promote the re-release of his debut album Back To Bedlam, 20 years on from storming the charts.

James told viewers of his ordeal as a youngster and explained how it happened - and why he had to shoulder the blame. He said on the show: "Speaking of cutting fingers off, my dad cut his own fingers off with a lawnmower. In the lawnmower, well remarkably stupid isn’t it.

"The wheel had come off and it was my fault as I’d hit a tree three weeks before and the wheel had fallen off, and I’d turned the engine off and put the wheel back on. Then when my dad was mowing the lawn, the wheel came off, he didn’t have very far to go so he just thought he’d pick it up. And he came back up with no fingers."

The singer also declared fans could soon wreck his life

He went on: So he was taken off to hospital and he tried to drive himself to hospital, a neighbour wouldn’t let him do that. Then I was told to see if I could find the fingers to see if we could put them back on and I couldn’t because it was like an apple – have you seen an apple go through a lawnmower? But we did find a nail."

The You're Beautiful singer's life is now much more settled down with a 'strong' wife and two young children - but he has experienced the highest of highs and lowest of lows during his lifetime. His experiences included witnessing the Kosovo War to recording the best-selling album of the nineties and grieving the loss and guilt of his best friend's death.

He spoke on Sunday Brunch about his plan to give fans the power to ruin his life - promised that he will change his name to ‘anything’ the public should request if his album returns to number one again. He told the other guests he will be as good as his word.

In a video posted on his Instagram account, he previously announced: "My name is James Blunt and you have the power to absolutely f**k my life. I know you've heard the rumours, and they are true, I'm rereleasing my debut album Back To Bedlam on October 11. Something that has kept me consistently rich for the past 20 years.

'So as a way to give back to you, my adoring public, if Back To Bedlam re-enters the charts at number one, I will legally change my name. What will I change it to? Well, it's entirely up to you. I've been called many things in my life, 'the most hated man in pop,' 'annoying,' 'James Beige,' I'll let the people decide."
