Strictly Come Dancing's Dr Punam Krishan 'life flashed before her eyes' in near-death experience

GP turned Strictly Come Dancing star Dr Punam Krishan once lost control of her car while driving on a 'busy' motorway at 70mph - and aquaplaned her vehicle into the central reservation

Dr Punam Krishan has had her fair share of traumatic moments.

The BBC star almost topped the Strictly leaderboard last week, receiving an impressive 33 points from judges for her dance to Bole Chudiyan from Kabhi Kushi Kabhie Gham with pro partner Gorka Márquez. The duo will aim for gold this week, as they take on the Jive to '2 Be Loved (Am I Ready) by Lizzo for the show's first-ever Icons Week.

But away from the glitz and glam of the ballroom, Dr Krishan experienced a horrendous birth in 2013 which saw her remain in intensive care for days - and that's not the only life threatening experience she's been through.

In Mach last year, the star posted a picture of all the flowers she received after crashing her car while going 70mph on a 'busy' motorway. "One minute you could be cruising along, living your best life and the next you could see it all flash before your eyes," she wrote.

"I lost total control of everything as my car aquaplaned across the lanes on a busy motorway at 70mph causing me to crash straight into the central reservation a few days ago. All blurry but yet so vivid, in slow motion but also too fast to register, so deafening but simultaneously silent; An experience of absolute fear but one that's left an overwhelming sense of gratitude. All this, all at once!"

While still trying to 'process what the hell happened', Dr Krishan took the opportunity to thank the 'absolute heroes' who stopped to help her after the almost fatal incident. She described one particular woman, whose name she didn't catch, as an 'angel'.

"She kept repeating 'you're safe, you're ok, we are going to get you out of here'," the celeb added. "I was trapped in the car, shocked, bleeding, and utterly helpless but I'll never forget her eyes. Looking straight at me with such compassion, love and reassurance. I immediately trusted and surrendered everything to her. I held her hands for dear life but she didn't flinch once, just kept telling me to breathe as she took charge until help arrived. Somewhere in all that, I remember her telling me she had just come from hospital, was on her own frightening health journey with cancer..yet she helped me. The ultimate act of kindness."

Dr Krishan thanked another passerby who 'took charge' when it came to informing friends and family of the crash. She also offered the celeb a blanket to keep her warm before paramedics arrived at the scene. "I've got it beside me now as a reminder of the sweetest strangers who'll touch your life in the most significant of ways," she continued. "You might never see them again but there's real goodness out there.
