British actress Millie Bobby Brown and her co-star Matthew Modine's relationship on screen during Stranger Things was somewhat tumultuous, to say to least.

But it seems the reality of their off screen life couldn't have been further away from their characters. So much so, Matthew described their friendship as "loving." Millie, 20, rose to stardom as a child star and Matthew immediately took her on as a protégé and even officiated her recent wedding to Jake Bongiovi, who is the son of rocker Jon Bon Jovi.

Matthew, was the first person to meet Jake and took on the paternal role of sizing "him up" and "suss him out." The actors first met when Millie was only 11 and Matthew described their friendship as "very nurturing" and "loving." When speaking to The Independent, Matthew explained that they bonded over them starring together on season four of the popular TV show, as Millie asked him to stay at her house.

At the time he said: "She saw me going through my process, which she'd never seen, of memorising lines, just sitting down with the script and saying the lines over and over again. She asked me why I work so hard to memorise. " He added: " She said Obviously you know the lines. What are you searching for?" And I said: 'Millie, I'm working with the most famous actress in the world! Certainly one of the most famous actresses in the world, and I have to be prepared'."

While speaking to Netflix, Millie claimed their close real life bond helped them create the dynamic needed for the show. Millie explained: "Papa and Eleven have such an intimate relationship, so we needed to be able to bond to portray that,' she explained. 'We meshed, and it was just a true, real friendship. Nothing was ever forced. It just worked." And show-runner Ross Duffer added: "Matthew and Millie are so close outside of the show. In Season 1, we're hinting at Brenner, but we really get to know him a lot better this season. They had so much fun working on scenes together. It really was a blast."

Matthew stayed with Millie's family in their home during season one of the TV show and soon became part of the family. He reportedly was only meant to stay for three days but it soon extended to three months. And his stay resulted in the family naming the guest house "Modine House."

This then allowed Matthew to feel compelled to "protect" his co-star and friend, and make sure her mental and physical health was well taken care of. In 2022, he told The Guardian: "When I was a young actor, if you had a show that was successful in 20 or 30 territories around the world, that would be unbelievable. Netflix is in more than 190 territories. "

He added: "What Millie and her generation have been exposed to through streaming is a kind of celebrity and power and reach that's bigger than anything in the entertainment industry before. It's a rollercoaster: there's ups and downs. The adoration and the love are not real, it's for something that you've created and it can be devastating." Millie's mother would often make them dinners following a long day filming on set.
