In the autumn months, algae can grow at an alarming rate, leaving paths and patios slippery and dangerous.

Luckily gardening expert and TV presenter Monty Don has taken to his blog to share a ‘genius’ method for removing algae quickly and easily. The gardening pro also shared a number of other gardening tasks that it’s a good idea to tackle in November, with many focusing on patios and paving. He explained that it’s not uncommon for cleanliness of patios and pathways to take a backseat compared to other gardening chores. But that, by neglecting these areas, growth of pesky - and potentially dangerous - green algae can increase at a fast rate, particularly on patios, walls and fencing.

He revealed that it’s during the wetter weather, such as in the late autumn and early winter, that algae and moss growth tends to significantly increase, with algae thriving on irregular surfaces, rather than smooth ones. Monty says that the main reason to remove algae from your garden is that it can be ‘dangerous’ at this time of year.

He explained: “At this time of year brick and stone paths can be very slippery and dangerous. “This is due to algae that grows on the surface, especially if wet and shaded and at this time of year they may stay wet and slippery for months.” For quick and easy removal, Monty recommends using a pressure washer to wash the algae away, saying that this is ‘the best way’.

He did add a warning that pressure washing can remove patio grout, so it’s important to repair any damaged areas of grout, and recommended using sand to repair these areas. Monty added that this method for removing moss and algae is a ‘very effective way’ to keep a patio clean and ensure that the path remains safe, without the need to use chemicals.
