As the chill sets in, drying clothes becomes a real headache - with many of us shunning costly tumble dryers for more economical solutions.

Yet, nothing is quite as disheartening as slipping into your favourite top only to be greeted by that musty, damp odour. In the balmy days of summer, airing laundry outdoors is a breeze, but the onset of drizzly weather and plummeting temperatures presents a new challenge.

Many households, having turned their backs on energy-guzzling tumble dryers, are now facing the dilemma of indoor drying without inviting that lingering smell. The solution?

Fans of cleaning guru Mrs Hinch, aka Sophie Hinchliffe, have come up with a nifty trick to keep your threads smelling fresh. On the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook group, one member sought advice for quick, odour-free drying indoors, posting: "What's the best way to dry clothes without a tumble dryer, please? I always find the clothes stink awful when I put them on the radiators/ small clothes airer. Washing pile is like a mountain at the min so all answers are greatly appreciated."

The consensus? Pair your airer with this clever item to banish bad smells for good. In the comments, a host of people agreed that employing a dehumidifier is a must as it siphons moisture from the air, thus reducing room humidity while clothing dries and curtailing the "awful" odour. One person remarked: "A Dehumidifier placed in front of the clothes airer works the best. Game changer."

Another advised: "It's not good to put clothes straight from the washing machine to the radiator. It would be worth investing in a dehumidifier, clothes dry quickly with one, put them on an airer beside it." A different cleaning enthusiast declared that harmoniously using an airer and dehumidifier will ensure your laundry will "smell great", instead of musty.
