A British pub has served up the UK's 'longest ever Bratwurst' with its measurements holding a savoury significance.

The record-breaking sausage comes in at 12.12m and was cooked up by a pub in Droitwich Spa, Worcs., in time for Oktoberfest. The giant German delicacy is the biggest ever served up in the Midlands and is thought to be the longest ever made in the UK.

Served with crispy onions and curry ketchup in homage to the Bavarian specialty, the sausage was cooked to length to symbolise the 1,212km from The Castle pub to Theresienwiese, Munich, the home of the international beer festival.

The sausage was supplied by 'The Sausage Man' Marc Razzell, who said he stuck to the traditional recipe for the beast. Mr Razzell was approached by Greene King-owned chain, Seared Pubs, to create the showstopper, challenge he was keen to get stuck into. The bratwurst took a team of ten to create, with weeks of preparation - but was only cooked in 30 minutes.

“We’ve been making bratwursts for decades using a recipe that’s been handed down from generation to generation in Germany,” he said. “It’s as traditional as you can get. It’s exciting to know that there will be enough of this authentic bratwurst for everyone to try, alongside other Oktoberfest staples like schnitzel and Bavarian beer.”

Starting on Saturday, Oktoberfest is one of the world's biggest festivals drawing six million visitors every year. Known for its sloshing beer steins and hearty grub, the extravaganza is currently in its 189th year and sees various similar duplicated events around the world in homage.

Hundreds of punters in the town got stuck in to the bratwurst to celebrate, with the pub also hosting stein-holding contests and an Oompah band to launch an Oktoberfest-themed menu. According to Guinness World Records, the world's longest ever sausage measured an incredible 62.75km - almost 39 miles - and was created in Ploiesti City, Romania in 2014.

Rebecca Hall, General Manager at The Castle, said: “Droitwich Spa is a long way from Munich, so we wanted to give our customers a taste of Oktoberfest in their local pub - and make history with the longest bratwurst in the Midlands. Our team had a lot of fun grilling this authentic bratwurst and will be delighted to serve customers German bratwurst from the same recipe and other Oktoberfest favourites until the end of October.”
