David Bowie could become hologram eight years on from his death - just like ABBA

'Heroes' singer David Bowie, who died in 2016, could return to the stage as a hologram after his name was formally trademarked under a classification that includes avatars

David Bowie could be back playing on stage as a hologram in a show that's a reminder of ABBA Voyage concerts.

The iconic superstar, who rose to prominence during the 70s, died at his New York City home on January 10, 2016, two days after the release of his 26th and final studio album, Blackstar. The 69-year-old songwriter and musician had been diagnosed with liver cancer 18 months before his death.

But now, a source said David's name has been formally trademarked under a classification that includes avatars. This means that there is a possibility the "Heroes" singer could return to the stage as a hologram. A source told The Sun: "Avatar shows are big business and ABBA's groundbreaking show has proved there is a huge demand. Getting David on stage again in the form of a hologram would be huge."

They added that the trademark, which is from a firm affiliated with the late singer's estate, means "the team can forge ahead with plans." It comes after we revealed that David and Mick Jagger planned to write and star in their own murder mystery film. The iconic singers drafted in Lynda La Plante to help write the script after her success with the TV show Prime Suspect in the early 90s. But when she went to meet them to discuss ideas, the pair were hungover and argued about what the plot should be and who they should play in the movie.

Rather than be in harmony, the singers couldn't agree on how the film would work. Writing in her new book Getting Away with Murder, Lynda said: "Writers for TV rarely experience hits. Two hits are even rarer....yet with the double hit of Widows and Prime Suspect, my phone was red-hot for the first time in my career.

"One call was from my then TV and film agent Duncan Heath's office. A message had come through my agent's wife, Hilary, that Mick Jagger and David Bowie wanted to meet with me to discuss an upcoming movie project – a crime thriller, apparently. A date was duly arranged and I trotted off to meet them in a central London hotel where they'd booked a suite for the day."

In January this year, the city of Paris honoured David by naming a street after him to commemorate what would have been his 77th birthday. Fans of the singer lined the streets of the French capital as they celebrated the inauguration of the landmark with a lively concert and beautiful exhibit dedicated to the beloved artist filled with photos and colourful flowers.

Jerome Coumet, the mayor of the 13th arrondissement, first announced the decision to immortalise the late singer back in 2020 to honour the artist's long-lasting impact on music, fashion, and culture in the city. Bowie fans raved as they welcomed the brand new street dedicated to the singer that lies between the Jardin des Plantes botanical gardens and the National Library. The street sits between two modern office buildings as well as the headquarters of famous news outlets Le Monde and L'Obs.
