Strictly Come Dancing’s new welfare teams had to check in on stars Katya Jones and Wynne Evans this weekend, as viewers speculated there was trouble between the pair.

But Katya, 35, insists her partner did not make her feel “uncomfortable or offended”, after she was seen moving his hand from her stomach back to her waist in a clip from Saturday night’s show in a clip shared online.

A separate incident, where Katya appeared to blank Wynne, 52, and roll her eyes when he attempted to high five her, was also shared widely on social media, prompting concern among multiple users.

Katya said yesterday: “I need to make something crystal clear .

“The hand incident that happened on Saturday night was a very silly inside joke between Wynne and I. So even the idea that it made me feel uncomfortable or offended in any way is complete nonsense. It’s actually absurd.

“So let’s focus on how brilliantly Wynne is doing and what an amazing dancer he’s becoming!”

Sources confirmed that newly instated welfare staff has checked in on the pair, and no further action would be taken.

The pair previously apologised specifically for the high five joke as well, saying: “We just wanted to say we were just messing around in the Clauditorium on Saturday night and just want to say sorry. It was a silly joke.”

Welsh opera singer Wynne, who previously appeared on the Go Compare adverts, also clarified: “We really are amazing friends. The high 5’s is a running joke.”

Fellow dancer Kai Widdrington commented: “Had the whole nation hook line and sinker.”

A source added: “Wynne and Katya have confirmed that their interactions in the Clauditorium were silly jokes they had planned together and have apologised to anyone who may have misinterpreted them. They addressed them on Wynne’s Instagram, where their apology can be found.

“Katya would like to clarify further that she was not offended by Wynne and was not made to feel uncomfortable in the least. The welfare team have checked in on the pair and there are no further actions planned.”

The new welfare measures, which includes chaperones watching over the contestants and dancers during their rehearsals, were introduced this year.

The new measures came as the BBC apologised to last year’s contestant Amanda Abbington following an investigation into her allegations against her former partner Giovanni Pernice, who has now left the show.

The BBC said in a statement regarding her allegations: “We have assessed the complaints and we have upheld some, but not all, of the complaints made.

“We want to apologise to Amanda Abbington and to thank her for coming forward and taking part. We know this would not have been an easy thing to do.”

Fellow dancer Graziano di Prima was also sacked this year, due to his conduct with partner Zara McDermott. She said it had been “distressing” to watch back a video of their time together.

Last week, the BBC announced it had appointed a change management consultancy firm to carry out an independent review of its workplace culture after several controversies involving high-profile presenters and TV shows have rocked the corporation in recent months.

Wynne had joked on Saturday night: “I really didn’t think I’d stay for a week. I’m an overweight opera singer so I’m having the best time, so maybe fat men can dance.”

He also said that dancing had helped him lose weight, adding: “I found my ribs this week, not seen them since 1987.”

Their tango to Abba’s Money, Money, Money scored 34 points from the judges, with Motsi Mabuse enthusing: “This is why I love Strictly Come Dancing.”

On Sunday night, professional dancers Nikita Kuzmin and Karen Hauer lead a special group dance to Swift’s song Wildest Dreams.

Nikita is partnered with hockey star Sam Quek while Karen is partnered with former footballer Paul Merson.

The routine has been choreographed by Mandy Moore, who worked with superstar singer Taylor on her latest tour.

Wynne’s girlfriend Liz Brookes, 50, was in the audience on Saturday night. The singer has been dating again after admitting he felt suicidal following the breakdown of his 16 year marriage.

Katya was previously married to former Strictly dancer Neil Jones.
